2014-2015 Blood Moon Tetrad – What Does It Mean?

Starting April 15, 2014, we will get to see something that has happened three other times in the last six centuries. It will be the first part of a Jewish Feast Blood Moon Tetrad – four complete lunar eclipses in a row that all land on a Jewish Feast Day. This has occurred seven times since the birth of Jesus Christ. The first four had significance to Jewish and Christian people, while the last three coincided with three of the most important events in Jewish history with incredible impacts on Christians as well.
We will discuss the history of the previous tetrads as well as what we will see this year and next, but first, a disclaimer. It is important to understand the times and to see Bible prophecy through the lens of what it means to us today. This is not a proclamation that anything significant will happen on April 15th, on any of the following three blood moons, or on the solar eclipse that occurs between the first two and the last two. As with all prophecy, we are not equipped as humans to draw conclusions ahead of time. These are signs and only God knows what they will signify until the events themselves unfold.
What this does mean is that we should be diligent in our faith and our mission of spreading the Gospel. Society today, more than ever in the past, is turning away from God as well as the people who love and believe in Him. There is a concerted effort being made to reprogram people into believing the greatest deception of them all, that God doesn’t exist, that Jesus Christ was not the Son of God, and that we are a random occurrence with a portion of us following fairy tales created thousands of years ago.
We may be in the End Times that so many have talked about for centuries. Believe only in what’s real, what is written on our hearts as truth despite all attempts to corrupt and falsify. There will be misleading elements from every angle – “holy men” claiming to be a savior, other religions trying to claim dominance, and modern “scholars” with answers that seem to make sense. They will all come in the name of peace, in the name of progress, and in the name of order. They will lead billions astray. They may even use the upcoming cosmic events to promote their own agendas.
Do not be fooled. Whatever happens in the next few years, know with a certainty that the deceptions they bring will be extremely convincing and most of your friends and family will want to go along with them. Do what you must to bring them to the truth but if given the choice between following your loved ones or following the Messiah in Grace, you must be committed to the righteous path described in the Bible. Eternity is a long time.
With that said, let’s discuss the Blood Moon Tetrads.
At the time when God created the universe, He made it very clear that he would be communicating with His people through the heavenly bodies.
Genesis 1:14 (NASB)
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;
It isn’t simply through tetrads that we have seen signs, but the seven previous ones since the Resurrection have given compelling evidence that they do signify important events. The first four occurred in in the first millennium AD. While it’s possible to look at history books and attribute significant events to the time periods surrounding 162-163, 795-796, 842-843, and 860-861, it would be a stretch to say that these events were clearly Biblical in nature and of enough significance to point to make a modern person’s jaw drop. Rather than mention the Antonine Plague, the attack on the Vatican church in Rome, or the end of Islamic invasions of Europe, we’ll assume that the events that transpired were significant but lost to history books.
The significance of the events surrounding the last three tetrads is very clear as we now have much better records of the events in the second millennium after Christ. One could argue that the three events that transpired around the previous three tetrads were the most important events to Jews, Christians, and the rest of the world in the last thousand years:
- 1493-1494 – One of the theories surrounding Christopher Columbus is that he was raised Jewish. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain coincided nicely with his voyage to America in 1492. It was a time when a good chunk of the world’s Jewish population was being dispersed from their homes while another refuge for them was being discovered, one that would help them survive as a people until their land was reclaimed. There is no telling what the Jewish population would be today if America had not been discovered at that time.
- 1949-1950 – Israel was admitted into the United Nations on May 11, 1949, shortly after winning back their homeland and declaring their independence the year before. This is perceived by many to have “started the clock” for a good chunk of Bible Prophecy.
- 1967-1968 – This was the time of the 6 Day War that put Israel back in control of Jerusalem.
With all three of these events, it is very clear that they held significance in carving out modern day Israel as well as Christianity.
What’s Happening Now
One misconception is that Tetrads are extremely rare. Tetrads are relatively common. There was one in 2003-2004. There will be another in 2032-2033. Five more will happen before the end of the century. What does not happen often is having these blood moons coincide with Jewish Feast days. That has happened seven other times since 1 AD.
The image above shows the dates of the upcoming tetrad as well as the solar eclipse that happens between the first two and last two. There are a handful of verses in the Bible the may be referring to this series of events:
Joel 2:30-31 (NASB)
30 “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
31 “The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood
Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
There are those who have speculated that the words of Joel refer in whole or in part to a time before Jesus Christ, but that is incorrect. In Acts 2, the verses from Joel are spoken again, signifying that they had not come to pass even at that time shortly after the resurrection.
The events may also be spoken of in Luke as Jesus speaks to His disciples about the last days:
Luke 21:25-28 (NASB)
25 “There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
Lastly, there is a mention of it in Revelation. This particular set of verses refer to the breaking of the seals in Heaven. The difference here is that there is an earthly event, a great earthquake, associated with the solar eclipse and blood moon. Depending on what is meant by the breaking of the seals, whether they are already in the process of being broken, and whether the time frame of the events are longer than most perceive, then one might see it as a reference to the upcoming tetrad. Recent great earthquakes may qualify as a portion of fulfilling this prophecy, depending on how it is understood.
Of course, if there’s a great earthquake in the next couple of years, then there should be no question that these verses are likely referring to now.
Revelation 6:12-17 (NASB)
12 I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. 14 The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; 16 and they *said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
Here are a couple of videos that help to bring home the point of the upcoming tetrads.
Is the tetrad a part of Bible prophecy that we should heed? We are told to always remain diligent and know that the 2nd coming will occur “as a thief in the night”, meaning that we are not intended to know when. However, we are given prophecies and told of the events to watch for as verification. Many prophecies of the Old Testament were intended to verify Yeshua as the Messiah when He first walked amongst His people. Those who were willing to recognize them as such were more easily able to believe in His divinity.
The signs and prophecies talking of the end days are meant to both verify our faith when the events begin to unfold as well as to warn us of the false doctrines and “saviors” that will come claiming to lead us to salvation. The tetrads should be viewed as a an event that, in conjunction with others, alert us to the end times that we are in. Faith and discipleship must come first. Believe in your Lord and Savior and see the signs for what they are, but do not get lost in the hype that can come with false signs. If the tetrads are significant, it will be crystal clear to those who have allowed their eyes and hearts to be opened through Christ.
